MetaServer/ MetaClient
Browsing, Managing, and Analyzing Data
MetaServer and MetaClient add sophisticated data management functionalities to any Ikaros, Isis, or VSlide installation. MetaClient was designed for browsing, managing and analyzing data. MetaServer runs on one computer in the network and enables MetaClient to access all data very efficiently.
Data Browsing
MetaClient includes powerful and very fast filtering, searching and sorting capabilities. It also provides a hierarchical tree view (including culture and slide levels) of all root directories, and a flexible and fast image gallery showing metaphases, karyograms and virtual slide images. From MetaClient images in Ikaros or Isis can be directly opened, thus, making MetaClient the ideal control center for an optimized workflow.
Data Management
MetaClient supports all operations necessary to keep your data in good shape: deleting cases or images, moving images to other cases, moving cases between root directories or renaming cases or images.
Data Analysis and Statistics
A customizable dashboard summarizes the most relevant data in a convenient way. Statistical queries can be created using an intuitive graphical editor. Informative diagrams and tables are generated from these queries. Basic workflow and productivity tracking can be established easily using these tools.
Reporting
A very flexible graphical report editor allows defining report templates that can be printed with dynamic data in a matter of seconds. Alternatively, reports can also be exported to PDF documents or to XML files for easy interfacing with other database systems (e.g. LIMS).
Intuitive and Customizable User Interface
The newly designed user interface of MetaClient excels with simplicity and ease of use and is highly customizable. The user interface can be easily optimized to fit to any workflow, and to increase productivity. There are various viewing modes available in MetaClient:
- Case lists for fast overview,
- Detailed case lists displaying selected case data,
- Image galleries showing metaphases, karyotypes, or VSlide images,
- The dashboard, a configurable quick overview of selected statistics results,
- The statistics page, allowing for executing highly flexible queries to extract the relevant results from large data sets.

 | Case ListThe case list view is the fast access hub to cases. Case names are displayed in a simple list, each case is selectable, and can be immediately opened in Ikaros, Isis, or the VSViewer. A summary of the case data is shown in the footer of the list once a case is selected.The case list becomes a time-saving tool with the filtering options: each list can be filtered either by date (selecting a time period such as 'last week', 'last month' etc., or even a time period between two selected dates), or by any data field (e.g. displaying all cases with a certain indication), or both.  | GalleryFurther insight into each case is provided by the gallery view. Cases are selectable in a convenient case tree, categorized by case name, cell culture, slide name, image, and image field. Images, metaphases, and karyograms are displayed as preview – with almost no delay even for largest data sets. The gallery view can be filtered, and each image can be loaded into Ikaros, Isis, or the VSViewer with a simple double click. Tooltips for each image show further information, including the processing status or, in the case of VSlide images, the position of the image on the slide. |
Statistics
With the extensive statistics module of MetaClient any amount of data can be analyzed easily, based on editable statistics queries. Queries can refer to any data field, can implement interactive user input, and can combine, group, and derive from any value in the data set. Thus, highly specialized data analyses can be made, resulting in convenient graphs and tables which are easily exported or printed in a statistics report. Query results can of course also be the basis of dashboard widgets.
A statistics query is easily created with the implemented graphical query editor. Each query is shown as flow diagram and can be edited, copied, and modified. Queries are stored as single files and can be exchanged between the systems, or even stored at a central location (e.g. on the server).
Based on the query editor it is also possible to create new data fields which are then part of the group of available and displayable fields.
Reporting
Generating customized reports for Ikaros and Isis is very easy with the integrated graphical report editor of MetaClient. Reports are composed of components including:
- Text fields displaying static and dynamic text
- Static Images for logos etc.
- Metaphases and Karyograms
- Tables with case or image data
- Query result tables or diagrams
- Image grid with metaphases and/or karyograms
Components can be placed and resized dynamically. Each component has specific properties (e.g. font size, image width etc.), which are edited with the integrated property editor. Page headers and footers (e.g. for pagination etc.) can be defined. The final report definitions are stored on the system, and are then accessible by MetaClient. If the definitions are stored centrally on the server, each MetaClient station has access to all available definitions. Reports can be printed, exported to PDF documents, or exported to XML files for easy interfacing with other systems (e.g. with LIMS).
Case Management / Error Handling
MetaClient supports all operations necessary to maintain data integrity: deleting cases or images, moving images to other cases, moving cases between root directories or renaming cases or images. MetaClient supports multi-selection which makes managing large amounts of data very convenient.
The ingenious built-in error handling concept detects data integrity problems and offers tools to solve them either automatically or interactively.
Of course these administrative functions can be selectively hidden for non-authorized users.
