SlideFeeder x80
High Throughput Slide Scanning
Each Metafer system is equipped with a high-end Maerzhaeuser stepping motor stage, allowing unattended scan of 8 slides. However, for labs with higher 
workload it may be desirable to run more slides within each unattended scanning session. Recently MetaSystems has introduced the new, second-generation SlideFeeder x80 with a capacity of 80 to 880 slides. The SlideFeeder x80 has been designed and built especially for use with Metafer systems in a high-throughput environment. The new feeder consists of a central feeder module, capable to pick slide frames from slide frame magazines, and to deliver them to the microscope stage. Compared to systems that handle single slides, the concept of exchanging whole, 5-slides trays is safe and much faster.
The 24/7 Slide Feeder
Slides are stored in slide frame magazines that can be easily transported using the convenient handle on top. Thus, slides can be loaded to magazines on the work bench, and, once they are complete, be delivered to the system. Precisely adjusted positioning pins (see image) automatically facilitate the correct alignment of the magazines. Due to intelligent sensor technology the SlideFeeder x80 is capable to detect the positions and the number of magazines, and to register the slide frames within the magazine by their bar code label. Therefore it is even possible to exchange magazines while Metafer is scanning. For routine labs therefore any Metafer system can be used as a fulltime image server – 24 hours per day, and 7 days a week.
SlideFeeder x80: Growing with Demand
Like MetaSystems software also the new SlideFeeder x80 was designed to seamlessly adapt to different working conditions. Any SlideFeeder x80 can be configured as basic machine hosting either 80 or 160 slides in one respectively two magazines. Next in size is the intermediate stage of extension with a capacity of up to 560 slides, organized in up to 7 magazines of 80 slides each. For maximum throughput the SlideFeeder x80 can be extended to host up to 11 magazines, thus, providing a total capacity of 880 slides.
Each SlideFeeder x80 can be complemented with an automated bar code reader (the BCR module which replaces one magazine), and a device to dispense immersion oil (AutoOiler 3). Additionally each single slide frame is coded. A Metafer* system equipped with a SlideFeeder x80 and barcode reader can therefore be operated completely unattended, and all relevant information for Metafer is provided through the codes.
The SlideFeeder x80: Second Edition of a Success Story
The SlideFeeder x80 represents the next generation of the renowned and successful MetaSystems SlideFeeder. More than 150 copies of the first generation 80-slides feeder have been installed since 2005. Both models are based on the proven concept of handling complete slide frames instead of single slides, thus reducing exchange time and errors. Like its forerunner model the SlideFeeder x80 is a genuine MetaSystems development, especially designed for use with Metafer scanning systems. All core components of the SlideFeeder x80 are Made In Germany.
